This engraving appeared in the Harper’s New Monthly Magazine in March of 1869 in an article titled "Policemen of the Sea" The image shows a lifeboat with rescued shipwreck victims who have just reached the mainland. It also shows the launching of a rope from a Lyle gun to the sinking ship. This would be done in an effort to rescue others by using a breeches buoy to get the victims to shore. It was the exploits of this nature that O’Connor wrote about.
