Educational supplies for children are among the items thrown out at the National Lighthouse Museum. The items were brand new and never used. The large placard in the back tells how in 1998 the American Lighthouse Coordinating Committee chose the old Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island as the site for the National Lighthouse Museum. Interestingly, in the October 1997 issue of Lighthouse Digest we asked our readers for a poll of where a National Lighthouse should be located. We published the results of that poll in November 1997 issue. Of the nearly 4,000 readers that responded only 3% wanted Staten Island as the site for museum. This was followed by 43% who favored a New England location and 23% for a site on the Great Lakes.
