Sombrero Key Lighthouse as it appeared in 1954. Several years later, in August 1959, Coast Guard Seaman Willis Parker, lost his life while attempting to land at the lighthouse. The following year the lighthouse was automated and its keepers were removed. In 1982, the Fresnel lens was removed and replaced by a modern optic. The old Fresnel lens is now on display at the Key West Lighthouse in Florida.
