At some point in the past, the Vent Ball bird screens needed to keep the feathered creatures from taking up residence in the top of the Cana Island tower were removed or damaged. The Coast Guard keepers of the time decided that affixing a wooden plate over the interior opening at the base of the Vent Ball was an adequate fix. While the wood plug worked in keeping the birds out it also stopped air flow and kept moisture in the lantern room. Decades of nest building materials and other years of bird debris that had accumulated was removed and filled several large garbage bags.
