George V. Codding started his lighthouse career at Ashtabula in 1896 as the 1st assistant keeper. He served here until March 1901 when he was promoted to Head Keeper at the Vermillion Lighthouse, also in Ohio, a position he held until November 1904 when he was transferred to become Head Keeper at the Buffalo Breakwater South End Lighthouse in New York. In 1913 he was transferred to become the Head Keeper at the Rochester Harbor Lighthouse in Rochester, New York, where he served until his retirement in 1940. During his tenure as a lighthouse keeper, he witnessed the transition of the organization in 1910 from the U.S. Light House Board to the Bureau of Lighthouses, when it became better known as the U.S. Lighthouse Service.
