Officially established on December 1, 1903 troubles abounded at this site even before construction of the lighthouse was completed. While delivering the construction materials to the site to build the lighthouse, the barge and vessel towing it sank in rough seas. The second attempt to land materials was successful, but storms hampered construction. The government fired the contractor and hired laborers to complete the construction. At low tide the lighthouse keeper had to use a derrick to hoist the stations boat and supplies to the lighthouse, which had been built onto of a stone crib. However, it was the high tide that proved to be an ongoing problem, especially in high seas when water would rush over the foundation. A spring storm in 1910 showed just how dangerous rough the water could be in high tide when the keepers had to be removed as the light station was nearly destroyed. The government abandoned the site and built new quarters on nearby Lincoln Island a short distance away from the original location. Interestingly, in 1912 Hassan Cork Tipped Cigarettes featured the first Lincoln Rock Lighthouse on its series of Hassan Tobacco Lighthouse Cards. There were 50 cards in a set, which today are highly sought after collectibles.
