Since 1970, the Door County Maritime Museum has been an integral part of the preservation of Cana Island Lighthouse. The keeper’s house contains exhibits of lighthouse life and history, from its construction in 1869 forward. The hexagonal stone oil house is also present, and visitors can climb the tower to enjoy the spectacular coastal view of the Door County peninsula and Lake Michigan. The causeway out to the island can be flooded, depending on the level of the lake, but in the event of too much water, the museum provides transportation across. Back to the edition of: Jan/Feb 2017
