Ray Pedrick, carrying one of the family’s pet bulldogs, is at the entrance to the Cleft of the Rock Lighthouse on Cape Perpetua near Yachats, Oregon. It was built by Gibbs in the 1970s and patterned after the former Fiddle Reef Lighthouse in British Columbia. He named it from the hymn “He Hideth My Soul in the Cleft of the Rock,” which is based on the Bible verse from Exodus 33:22. The Gibbs’ lighthouse is still maintained by the family today, much as it was when Jim and Cherie Gibbs lived there. Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2017
