Captain Charles A. A. Modeer, who is seated with the white shirt cuff showing, is very serious-looking in this circa 1916–1919 photograph of the crew of the lighthouse tender Rose. The only other crew member currently identified is the Chinese cook, Murphy, who stands behind Modeer with a chef’s hat on. Charles A. A. Modeer served for over 30 years on lighthouse tenders. He started on the Lightship Columbia and then served on the Armeria and Heather. When he came back to the Manzanita after the war, he remained her captain for the next 22 years until his retirement in 1941. (National Archives)
