The York Spit Lighthouse at the approach to the York River from the Chesapeake Bay near the city of Poquoson, Virginia was first lighted on November 15, 1870. It was here where Charles E. Respess was stationed from 1899 to 1904, Clarence W. Salter was stationed from 1903 to 1908, and John Filmore Hudgins was stationed from 1909 to 1919. This photo of the lighthouse was taken on March 18, 1918. After the lighthouse was decommissioned, it was dismantled in June of 1960. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
