In the dark uniforms are Maine lighthouse keepers Myrick Morrison of Curtis Island Lighthouse, Arthur Beal of Whitehead Lighthouse, and Arthur Mitchell of Fort Point Lighthouse at their retirement ceremony. The other two Coast Guard officers are Rear Admiral H.G. Bradbury, Commander of the First Coast Guard District out of Boston, and Lieutenant (JG) George Tardiff (USCG). Because of a mistake is his birth records, Arthur Mitchell had to stay at Fort Point Lighthouse until 1952 when he officially retired after the mandatory retirement age of 70, something that he did not mind. He got to spend more time at the lighthouse and rather than his retirement income, he received full pay during that time. Born on August 19, 1879, Arthur B. Mitchell died on September 9, 1964 at the age of 85 and was buried in the Gordon Cemetery in Searsport, Maine. (Photo courtesy of David Gamage.)
