Built in 1917, the Navassa Island Lighthouse, at 162-feet tall was the most difficult and tallest concrete lighthouse to be built by the United States Lighthouse Service. It was built to aid vessels headed to the Panama Canal. The keeper’s house shown in this historic image is now in ruins and the now abandoned lighthouse is in a rapid state of deterioration. The lighthouse and the island are now under the control of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and public access to the island is prohibited. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
