This newspaper wire photo dated March 17, 1946 shows Fort Gratiot Lighthouse keeper William A. Wilkinson at the fog machinery. The newspaper caption with the photo read, “Fog at the lower end of Lake Huron, where the shipping lanes narrow to enter St. Clair River, means immediate danger to the long freighters with valuable cargo.
