Keeper John M. Cowan began his service at Heceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon in 1894 for two years until he transferred to Coquille River Light, Oregon in 1896. He then became head keeper at Cape Flattery Lighthouse, Washington in 1900 where he stayed for the next three decades until he brought his 38-year career to a close in 1932 at the mandatory retirement age of 70. He tried to rescue his son, Forrest, at the peril of his own life, and was awarded a medal from the U.S. Navy for his efforts which, while heroic, were sadly unsuccessful.
