Assistant keeper Clifford “Cap” B. Hermann took part in the rescue. Keeper Hermann, pictured here with his wife Audrey, had a long lighthouse career of 45 years, beginning at Destruction Island in 1905 before coming to Cape Flattery in 1907, then back to Destruction Island as head keeper in 1911 following the Tatoosh tragedy. He next went to Lime Kiln in 1919, Cape Arago in 1922, and then to Heceta Head Lighthouse in 1925 for the following 25 years. During his career, he received at least four efficiency stars and also the Albert E. Gallatin award upon his retirement in 1950 at age 70. (Courtesy Siuslaw National Forest)
