This 1959 view of the Gull Rocks Light Station shows the dock and the fog bell. In 1961, the Coast Guard hired the Newport Demolition Company to demolish the Gull Rocks Light Station, and on July 21, 1961 they burned the station to the ground. In 1969, the automated skeletal tower that remained on the island was discontinued when the Newport (Rhode Island) Bridge was discontinued. A Coast Guard helicopter then hoisted the skeletal tower off the island. It is not known what happened to the fog bell. In 1973, the small outcropping of land where the Gull Rocks Light Station once stood was sold to a private individual. The only thing still standing on the island today is the remnants of the brick oil house.(Photo by Robert R. Charette.)
