On May 23, 1981, a dedication ceremony was held for the small maritime museum that the keepers created at the lighthouse. Captain James L. Fear, Chief of Operations, Third Coast Guard District addresses the crowd. Local officials and other Coast Guard representatives participated. It is interesting that the Montauk Historical Society opening of the current museum was also on May 23, but six years later in 1987 when the Coast Guard era ended at automation.
