Oregon’s Cleft of the Rock Lighthouse was built by Jim Gibbs and where he resided in his final years. Not seen but inscribed above the door is a plaque that says,“Brightly beams our Father’s mercy from His lighthouse evermore, but to us He gives the keeping of the lights along the shore.” The words come from the popular hymn “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning” which is also known as “Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy.” (Photograph courtesy Bob and Sandra Shanklin, The Lighthouse People.)
