Hans Beuthe would often include his original sketches in his letters to the children, such as this one while he was at Hog Island Shoal Lighthouse. His letters also showed his sense of humor, such as when he wrote Teddy that he was getting a hunting license to shoot ducks and geese from the light, and if successful, the keepers would “live high, so you will have to get a stepladder to reach us.” (Courtesy Robert H.
