Philip Paul Bliss (1838-1876) was an evangelist and song writer who wrote the words and music to Let the Lower Lights Be Burning. He also wrote the words to the famous hymn Wonderful Words of Life as well as the music for Horatio Spafford’s It Is Well With My Soul. Bliss and his wife both perished in the great Ashtabula (Ohio) River Railroad Disaster. Found in his trunk, which somehow survived the crash and fire, was a manuscript bearing the lyrics of I Will Sing of My Redeemer, the only well known Bliss gospel song for which he did not write a tune. Soon thereafter it was set to music by James McGranahan and it became one of the first songs recorded by Thomas Alva Edison.
