The last lighthouse keeper to serve at the Stamford Harbor Lighthouse was Martin “Marty” Luther Sowle, Sr., who was stationed there for 15 years, from 1938 to 1953. Born on May 5, 1900 in Fall River, Massachusetts, Martin Sowle, Sr. served in the U.S. Army in the 53rd Field Artillery Battery E. He was married to Lillian Dyson and the couple had seven children. After serving in the Army, he was a game warden before becoming a lighthouse keeper. (Courtesy of David Sowle)
