In 1888, after a hurricane heavily damaged the Ned’s Point Light Station, a new lantern was installed on the tower and the old keeper’s house was replaced by the frame house shown here, which is similar to keepers’ homes at many New England Lighthouses. Russell B. and Ada Atwood Eastman, along with their daughter Florence, were the last lighthouse family to live at Ned’s Point Lighthouse. Florence Eastman (1894-1918) became a distinguished Army nurse in World War I who died after catching the Spanish Influenza. The American Legion Post 280 in Mattapoisett is named after her.
