Larnet Hall, Jr. served as the lighthouse keeper of Ned’s Point Lighthouse in Massachusetts from 1849 to 1853 and again from 1859 to 1874. We are not sure about the history of the uniform that he is wearing. Some of the people who have seen the photo believe that he is wearing a uniform of the Knights of Columbus, while others believe it is a Knights Templar uniform. Also, upon close examination you will notice that his left hand is not showing. Did he borrow someone else’s coat, did he have a bad tailor, or did he lose a hand—perhaps in the war? The photography studio of Jenney & Smith of 52 Purchase Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts took the photograph. If you look closely, you will notice a gap between the heels of his shoes where you can see a metal posing stand that photographers of that era used to keep their subjects comfortable while the tin plate was being exposed to make the picture. That way, the subject would not move or the printed photograph might be blurry. (Charles DeLoach collection, Lighthouse Digest archives)
