Tangier Island Shoal extended “from the southern end of Tangier Island across the entrance of the sound in such way that in the absence of a light, vessels cannot at night enter or leave the sound in safety.” The Lighthouse Board, in the Annual Report of 1887, went on further to state “that the time has come when the interests of commerce and navigation require that action should be taken in this matter, and it is therefore recommended that an appropriation of $25,000 be made for the establishment of a screw-pile light-house on this shoal.” As a result, Tangier Sound Lighthouse was established in 1890 and William Asbury Crockett was the first assistant keeper. This photo was taken in 1915, a year after Asbury drowned. (Courtesy U.S. Coast Guard)
