In May of 1914, three months after Asbury’s death, Harper’s Monthly Magazine published an article about Tangier Island and its inhabitants. The author was told by one Tangierman that “most generally we Tangier folk kinda like to flock to ourselves. Thar’s nigh five hundred Crocketts on Tangier today,” which explains why Asbury married his cousin, Margaret. Edward L. Thomas, who was head keeper of Tangier Sound Lighthouse during Asbury’s drowning, was also a member of the Crockett family. He married a Crockett and his mother was a Crockett. It is likely that this photo, which accompanied the Harper’s article, was taken around the time Asbury drowned, and that the people on the porch steps were closely related to him.
