Photo Caption:

A young Coast Guardsman the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station stands behind the steel groin that was installed in June 1930 as he looks toward the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. If you look closely you will notice that the first-order Fresnel lens is covered in a Light-House Establishment standard issue white linen shroud to protect the prisms. This photograph is from the December 1933 National Geographic magazine from a photo taken by Clifton Adams in April of that same year. (Courtesy John M. Havel of Sunrise Over Salvo)
