The third lighthouse built on Long Island was also a cast iron tower built in 1880-1881 to replace the first cast iron tower built in America in 1844. This cast iron tower was demolished and sold for scrap in 1901 when a new brick tower was built at a higher point on the island. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
