Prior to serving as the keeper at Long Island Head Lighthouse, from 1906 until his death in 1918, he had previously served at Spectacle Island Lighthouse in Inner Boston Harbor from 1904 to 1906, and before that, at the Thacher Island Light Station off the coast of Rockport, Massachusetts from 1893 to 1904. While stationed at Thacher Island Lighthouse, his mother, Sarah E. (Day) Tarr, died at the lighthouse where she had been residing with her son and daughter-in-law.
