This photo of Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse was taken in 1948, two years before Eugene and Amanda Coleman arrived. The couple would finish Eugene’s service here in 1955. The Bangor Daily News reported that, “At the time of official retirement came commendation and a special award. The U.S. Treasury Department presented Coleman the Albert Gallatin Award for service. Also received were a check and two letters of commendation, as well as a letter from Senator Frederick G. Payne. Both A.C. Richmond, commandant of the Coast Guard, and R.L. Rainey, commander of the 1st District, Coast Guard, sent laudatory messages.” It is too bad that the government didn’t address the letters of commendation to the wives as well for what they had to endure to serve with their husbands.
