The Peshtigo Reef Lighthouse, shown here in 1997, first lighted on May 6, 1936, had been built to be an automated, unstaffed lighthouse, to replace the Peshtigo Reef Lightship. Today, the red band has faded to the point that the tower looks almost all white. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo)
