On May 11, 1918, Edwin L. Eaton resigned from the U.S. Lighthouse Service after serving as the Chief Engineer on the Portland Lightship LV74. Friends and relatives would often stop by to visit him at his residence in South Portland, Maine, where he would enthrall them with stories while he would sit in his home-made rocking chair smoking his corn-cob pipe.
