Even before purchasing Southern Island, Andrew would come and paint watercolors of Tenants Harbor Lighthouse upon occasion. Southern Island Light shows the dilapidated condition of the tower and watch room in 1977, the year before the Wyeths bought the property from Walter Whitehead who had owned it since 1953, but performed very little maintenance over the years.
