The ice could easily damage screw-pile lighthouses in the wintertime because of the movement of the floes. This 1947 photo of Mathias Point Lighthouse in the Potomac River shows how the ice could climb several feet up the pile bases at the water line, giving it strength to snap or dislodge them if the whole floe moved significantly.
