An early photo of Ship Island Lighthouse, with its keeper’s house, in our close-up image, shows keeper Daniel McCall and his wife, Elizabeth, with their dog on the front porch. Dan lost his right leg up to the hip during the Civil War. In February of 1862, his discharge record states he mustered out after only eight months due to disability.
