Jefferson Davis (1808-1889), who served as the Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce, and also represented Mississippi in the Senate and House of Representatives, later became the President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865 during the Civil War. It was through his instigation that Fort Massachusetts was built on Mississippi’s Ship Island. (Library of Congress)
