Daniel McCall was born in Ohio in September of 1844 and had moved with his family to Iowa by 1860 where he was employed as a hostler. Contrary to what some historians have written, he was not a Confederate. He enlisted on the Union rolls in May of 1861 in the 3rd Infantry, Company F at age 16 and mustered out on February 10, 1862. It was impressive that he was chosen to be a Corporal at such a young age. Dan served at Ship Island Lighthouse from 1875 until he transferred to Cat Island Lighthouse in 1899, where he died on June 25, 1904 of a heart attack at the young age of 59. He is buried in the Chalmette National Cemetery in Chalmette, Louisiana. Hopefully, the day will come when someone or some organization will honor him with the placement of a U.S. Lighthouse Memorial Marker at his gravesite.
