Alto Velo Island is as desolate today as when Dillon visited it in 1947. The lighthouse ruin is barely visible standing on the island’s 500-foot peak. The keeper, described by Dillon as a “tattered soul,” and his wife must have felt like castaways living in such a desolate location under hardship circumstances.
