Captain Haskell is using the real Anacapa Island Lighthouse dinghy to go “marketing” with Petunia the pelican sitting on the stern. Haskell was portrayed by Clarence “Chuck” Hastings, who appeared mostly in Westerns, all the way back to the silent-film era. He was chosen for the role due to his wizened features and use of a real peg-leg. However, he had to learn how to row a boat for the film, so director Couffer had him practice in a large cattle-watering tank before going out to Anacapa Island. But that didn’t put Hastings totally at ease since he reportedly couldn’t swim and was afraid of water. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
