By the mid-1930s, LeRoy had had numerous short-term jobs, including working for the U.S. Lighthouse Service as a substitute keeper for several years. His sister, Beatrice (left), had married, but his younger sister, LaVerne (right), was in high school and still lived at Point Hueneme Lighthouse where this photo was taken on the porch steps. Their father, Walter White, would remain keeper there until 1948, but the last eight years were spent at the new Point Hueneme Lighthouse, constructed in 1940. The old lighthouse was destroyed by the Navy during World War II to make room for a new Naval base. (Courtesy of Betty Westby)
