Robbins Reef Lighthouse as it appeared in 1917 when Kate Walker was still living in the lighthouse. At this time there was a canopy over the lower deck of the lighthouse. The foghorn is shown protruding from the lower right side of the tower. Kate said as soon as she knew the fog would be rolling in, it would only take her fifteen minutes to get the furnace to generate enough steam to operate the foghorn as well as the fog bell. The lighthouse is located two miles from the Statue of Liberty. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
