The German freighter, SS Liebenfels, in dry dock at Charleston Navy Yard, South Carolina, on 6 May 1917. Dillon went to the federal trial of the German crew who sabotaged and scuttled her in the Cooper River near Charleston as a prelude to war. A few months later, she was raised and outfitted at the Navy Yard for service as an American Naval vessel, the Houston, as shown in this photo. (Courtesy U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command)
