Photo Caption:

The only known photo of Sand Island’s 4th order Fresnel lens was found in the discovered Wellisch photo album. It is believed that the Fresnel lens was removed from the lantern in 1933 when an acetylene light was placed atop a 48-foot steel tower that was erected near the lighthouse. (Other sources state that the Fresnel lens was removed from the tower in 1921.) Regardless of the date, the lens mysteriously disappeared and its whereabouts remains a mystery to this day.
