California’s second Fort Point Lighthouse was lighted for the first time in March of 1855. However, by 1860, the 36-foot-tall lighthouse, built on the outside of the seaward wall of the fort, became endangered from erosion. It was torn down in favor of a lighthouse to be built atop the fort. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
