This vintage color post card, with a divided back, by J. F. Quilty of Chatham, Massachusetts, shows the twin towers of the Chatham Lighthouse and the nearby Mack Monument. The Mack Monument was erected in October of 1903 to commemorate the memory of William Henry Mack, owner of the coal barge Wadena, and its four crew members; and the eight members of the Monomoy Life Saving Station, who all lost their lives on March 17, 1902. On that day, the lifesavers (surfmen) had rescued all hands on the Wadena, but as they were returning to the mainland, a huge wave hit the lifeboat broadside and it capsized. The only survivor was surfman Seth L. Ellis.
