On May 8, 2012, a Coast Guard helicopter took part in the ceremony at Chatham Lighthouse honoring the 60th Anniversary of the 1952 rescue by the crew of the Coast Guard motor lifeboat CG 36500 and the surfboat from the USCGC Yakutat, that rescued the crew of the sinking SS Pendelton, in what has been described as the greatest Coast Guard rescue in history. The 2016 movie “The Finest Hours” was based on this event.
