Elmer F. Holbrook was stationed on Matinicus Rock from 1898 to 1907 before transferring to Isle au Haut Light from 1907 to 1922. Tragically, the author of this article was referring to the death of Elmer and Eunice’s oldest son, Ansel Holbrook, when he wrote about the lack of immediate medical help casting a shadow on the keepers’ happy existence. Ansel had died just one year prior due to a liver abscess while living on Matinicus Rock and being unable to get back to the mainland for medical treatment. (Courtesy of Heather Godfrey Willis)
