Part of the assigned duties of the keeper at South Bass Island Lighthouse was also to maintain the navigational aid and the airway light at the Perry Memorial Monument on South Bass Island. The 35- tall tower was built in 1915 to commemorate Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and his decisive victory in the Battle of Lake Erie that was fought in the War of 1812, and to also inculcate the lessons of international peace by arbitration and disarmament.
