Peter L. Shook, who was the first lighthouse keeper of the Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse, died in the line of duty on March 31, 1849. Although not confirmed, Peter Shook may have been the first documented lighthouse keeper to die in the line of duty on Lake Huron and possibly the Great Lakes. Interestingly, Peter L. Shook is a direct ancestor of Jeff Shook, of the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy, who is active in saving lighthouses and their history and that of the United States Life Saving Service and the United States Coast Guard on the Great Lakes..
