Horace Foster Norton (3/18/1843-11/29/1911) is shown here in 1909 at the age of 66. As well as being an assistant lighthouse keeper at Whitehead Lighthouse, he held positions as a keeper and a surf-man of the Whitehead Life-Saving Station. During his career at the Life Saving Station he resigned twice. After resigning as keeper in 1882 he was replaced by Freeman Shea, However, at Shea’s request, Norton then signed on for two more years as a surf-man. In October of 1885 Norton moved his wife and eight children to Westbrook, Maine and he held various jobs in the area: at a grist mill, leather board mill, silk mill and hauling building stone. The oldest son, Arthur, was 15 and he did not attend school but worked to help support the family. Yet, through self-education he became a noted and widely published ornithologist.
