Loren Edward Tillett, Sr. (Mar. 3, 1891- Oct. 2, 1959), shown here with his wife, Esmeralda, had a long distinguished career as a lighthouse keeper that started in 1914 under the United States Lighthouse Service at North Carolina’s Cape Fear Lighthouse. He subsequently served at Cape Lookout Lighthouse in North Carolina, Cedar Point Lighthouse in Maryland, Currituck Beach Lighthouse in North Carolina, Craighill Channel Lighthouse in Maryland, Thimble Shoals Lighthouse in Virginia, Cape Charles Lighthouse in Virginia, and Cape Henry Lighthouse, also in in Virginia. When the Coast Guard took over the Lighthouse Service in 1939, he elected not to join the Coast Guard as military personnel, but remained as a civilian lighthouse keeper. Tillett and his wife had nine children. Tragically, one of their children, son Merle, at the age of six, died by drowning in the waters off Cedar Point Lighthouse.
